Cat Traps

Feral cat populations, and feral cats can cause more problems than they are worth. They can spread diseases If the population is not controlled it can quickly get out of hand. Statistics claim that over 70 million feral cats roam freely in the United States. These wild cats can quickly disrupt the natural flow of the food chain by killing mass amounts of birds. There seems to be some debate as to whether or not this is true but there is one thing that is for certain. Feral cats are wild animals and they act like it. If cornered they will bite, scratch and attack to defend themselves.

So what is the best solution?

A humane cat trap can safely trap feral cats.

Remember it is not the cat's fault. Unfortunately irresponsible people are to blame. Most of these cats were abandoned by their owners and formed small colonies. They breed very quickly and soon the population of feral cats explodes.

Cat TrapsOk, so you have a cat trap and you think this will be easy. I can just set the trap up and catch some cats. Well it is not quite that easy. These cats are wild animals and they have a natural fear of people. They are smart. They know what you are up to. Here are some tips that will help you catch cats with your new cat trap.

You need to start feeding the feral cats. This will get them used to your presence. Feed them the same time and place everyday. Make them trust you. When they have become more accustomed to your presence do not feed them for one day. Make them hungry. Make them desperate to get the food that you are going to place in the trap.

Trap day!

Do not try and trap the cat during the heat of the day. They can easily suffer heat stroke and die. For best results set the trap up later in the afternoon. You want to catch them at night.

Put the trap close to the cat's regular feeding area. Make sure that trap is level or it will not work. Line the inside of the trap with newspaper. This is very important. Most people forget this step. Feral cats are smart and picky. If you do not line the trap with newspaper, they will not enter the trap. They do not like walking on the wire floor.

Now for bait use something that has a pungent odor, something that they can not resist. Tuna is always an excellent choice. Canned sardines are usually the best. They just stink! Chicken is a close second. Set the trap according to the instructions and wait out of sight. Check the trap every 30 minutes.

Success!

Now that you have successfully trapped a cat with your humane cat trap, what are you going to do? The very first thing that you should do is cover the trap with an old towel. This will keep the cat calm and prevent any injury to you or the cat.

There are several choices. The best choice would be to have the cat spayed or neutered. This will help control the population. The second choice would be to give the cat to a feral cat shelter, animal shelter or your local human society.. The last choice would be to have the cat euthanized. This should be a last resort.
